1. PhD Research Fellow in Experimental Heavy-Ion Physics

Project description for this fully funded PhD program in Norway

The position is associated with the Norwegian ALICE project at CERN, funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The heavy-ion group of the Department of Physics, University of Oslo, participates in the ALICE experiment, which in 2022 will enter the third round of data taking with ultrarelativistic pp, Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN (LHC Run-3), after comprehensive upgrades improving tracking performance and readout speed.

During this run period, a huge gain (~ 102 ) in event statistics will enable precision measurements of rare probes like charm and beauty hadrons down to low transverse momentum as well as heavy flavour-tagged jets and their substructure, and provide access to numerous new physics observables. A crucial element in the realization of this physics programme is the development of software frameworks and efficient algorithms for handling the immense amounts of data expected during Run-3. In addition to physics analysis and related software development, the group is also involved in instrumentation activities associated with the ALICE Inner Tracking System (ITS) and Forward Calorimeter (FoCal), in collaboration with the heavy-ion groups at the University of Bergen.

7. Doctoral Research Fellow in Philosophy

Description of research project for this PhD program

A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in philosophy is available at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas, University of Oslo. The Doctoral Research Fellowship is funded by the Research Council of Norway and is associated with the project The Kantian Foundations of Democracy, 324272 – FORSKER21. The candidate is expected to present a research project closely connected to the main project. 14. PhD Research Fellow in Intelligent Dynamic Energy Systems

Project description for this PhD program

The PhD research fellow will be part of the IDES (Intelligent Dynamic Energy Systems) project. IDES is a collaboration project between the Institute For Energy Technology (IFE), The Norwegian Defense Research Establishment (FFI) and Department of Technology Systems (ITS) at the University of Oslo, all located at Kjeller outside Oslo, Norway. Energy systems can be complex with many components exhibiting highly dynamic behavior in terms of unpredictability in energy consumption and production. For example, variable renewable energy sources, such as solar power or wind power, are intermittent and can be hard to predict, so dealing with the dynamics in energy systems is a challenge that is expected to receive growing interest in the years to come.

15. PhD Research Fellow in Geosciences

Project description for this PhD program

A 3 years PhD Research Fellowship is available at Department of Geosciences and the Centre for Biogeochemistry in the Anthropocene (CBA) at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo, Norway. Starting date is no later than 01.10.2022. The Paris agreement defines 2 °C as an upper level of global average temperature increase to avoid “dangerous effects” such as positive feedbacks in the global C-cycle. A major climate feedback of concern is the mobilization of vast amounts of terrestrial C in the boreal biome and their release into the atmosphere as the greenhouse gases CO2 and CH4. Knowledge gaps on biogeochemical feedback mechanisms across the boreal biome, with varying sensitivities to climate-related shifts in ecosystem traits, restrict our ability to make robust predictions of interactions between climate and C cycling (ecosystem metabolism). In particular, microbial and geochemical control of organic matter processing under expected ecosystem transitions, such as vegetation changes and thawing permafrost, are poorly understood.
