1. Net zero carbon energy systems

Reaching the target of net zero emissions locally, nationally and globally has assumed importance as the international community tries to negotiate the developmental challenges while remaining within the planetary boundaries. The race to develop sustainable solutions for the global transformation within a limited time horizon is a major challenge. This is even more challenging when society faces many other struggles, including those related to their basic needs on a day-to-day basis. But climate actions could be designed to generate wider socio-economic benefits that could support sustainable development objectives at different levels. Yet, such integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) into climate actions is rare and the challenges arise due to a lack of appropriate tools and appropriate governance arrangements that can support the decision-making process at the local level.

2. Probabilistic treatment of multi-scale residual stress and defects in fracture assessment of dissimilar joints for nuclear fusion 

Nuclear fusion can offer sustainable electricity. However, challenges in the design, manufacturing and structural integrity of high value-added fusion components are yet to be overcome. These components use complex materials systems, joining geometry/interface and fabrication processes to operate in extreme conditions (high temperature and thousands of cycles of long plasma pulse). The service life is limited due to the significant joining-induced residual stress (RS) by the thermo-physical property mismatch between joint parts. To contribute to the design and structural integrity assessment of the next fusion reactor by ~2030, the issues related to the integration of advanced materials, joining technique and structural integrity assessment need to be studied. Newly emerged state-of-the-art techniques are timely needed to examine the critical mechanical behaviour of brazed joints. Indentation (Micro-, Nano-) has been used to measure spatially resolved RS (such as thin metal layers and surface of bulk materials et al). This project aims to create fundamental understandings of multi-scale RS and their influence on mechanical performance of dissimilar joints via multi-scale indentation. The outcome of this project will provide a significant contribution to the design and structural integrity assessment of the next fusion power plant.

3. Development of biological dosimetry for optimization of proton and FLASH radiotherapy

The project aims to investigate the use of specific biomarkers in the context of FLASH and proton irradiation to validate their use for this type of exposure specifically in the context of radiation oncology, filling in gaps in knowledge to assist with the transition to personalized medicine in radiotherapy.

4. Human-AI Team Collaboration at Work

We seek applications from enthusiastic, self-motivated students for studentships in the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP), and specifically, our new Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence (AI). Funded doctoral research projects will investigate how human employees collaborate with AI systems at work, and to design inclusive, fair, and responsible AI for Human-AI Teaming. In addition to excellent numerical and programming skills, previous experience in deep learning, tourism and the hospitality industry would be highly advantageous.

5. Quality Estimation for Machine Translation

This project offers full scholarships (at Home rates) to suitable PhD candidates who wish to work on the interaction between translation and technology, especially with regard to how we can use computers to assess the quality of (automatic) translations. 6. Deep learning for sign language recognition and translation

The project will research and develop new approaches at the interface between computer vision and neural machine translation with the fundamental goal of addressing automatic recognition and translation of sign language to spoken language. In addition to excellent numerical and programming skills, previous experience in deep learning, NMT, computer vision and sign language would be highly advantageous.

This project is under the supervision of Professor Richard Bowden who runs the cognitive vision lab within the Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing. He has a long-standing international track record of work covering many areas of computer vision and machine learning which include visual tracking and the location, tracking, and understanding of humans. You will be joining a thriving research group with ongoing projects into perception for autonomous vehicles, sign language recognition/production and robotics and AI.

7. Space MIMO: advanced signal processing techniques for satellite communications in 6G era

Applications are invited to apply for a full 3-year PhD Studentship in signal processing techniques for satellite communications. The role will include both theoretical and applied research in the well-equipped 6GIC/ICS at University of Surrey, UK. Future wireless communication networks are expected to provide a much more satisfying service to people by building uninterrupted and ubiquitous connectivity to everyone, everything, and everywhere with ultra-high data rate, extremely high reliability and low latency. Non-terrestrial communications have emerged as a key enabler for seamless connectivity in the upcoming generation networks. However, direct satellite to mobile solutions remain a challenge. This project looks at possible signal processing techniques to improve the link beside studying the orbital optimization factors.

8. Wake modelling of offshore wind turbines in non-neutral atmosphere

The inevitability of climate change1 and net-zero policies across the globe are urgently promoting the need for renewable energies – wind energy is so far the most cost-effective – hence, its production will have to increase drastically in the next decade2. As of June 2018, offshore wind powers more than half a million UK homes, and by 2030, the country pledges to generate “40 GW from offshore wind– enough to power every home in the UK”3. As our society becomes ever-more dependent on wind power, it is increasingly important to gain a deeper understanding and more accurate predictability of wind power availability to guarantee a greener future. The aim of the project is to develop a more encompassing wake engineering model that accounts for the effect of different atmospheric states on the wake flows. You will focus on the characterisation of wind turbines performance and wakes interaction in different atmospheric conditions through a series of wind tunnel experiments in the EnFlo facility at Surrey.

9. Effect of chemical degradation and formulation stability on viscoelastic relaxation processes

Previous work at AWE has investigated stress relaxation and viscoelastic properties of polymer materials. However, the way in which different chemical processes effect the viscous relaxation process is not something that has been studied. This is particularly so with highly filled (e.g. boron) materials where changes (e.g. hydrolysis, physical rearrangement) at the boron/binder phase could alter load bearing properties. This area of investigation is novel particularly for highly filled Additively Manufactured (AM) materials. Improved understanding of formulation and the impact of processing variables on relaxation phenomenon will ultimately help the development of products with more controlled load bearing characterizations. These studies will provide processing-structure-property-performance relationships for soft materials.

10. Investigating and modifying the physiological processes associated with premature frailty and physical dysfunction in adults with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia

This studentship aims to understand and modify the physiological processes that are associated with the risk of frailty in older adults with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). Using a series of exercise and diet-based interventions, we will examine the primary drivers of physiological dysfunction and generate data to improve lifestyle prescriptions in adults with CLL.

The successful candidate will be able to explore the physiological phenotype of people with CLL before, during and following exercise and diet-based interventions. Students will use technologies such as near-infrared spectroscopy, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, peripheral quantitative computed tomography, isokinetic/isometric dynamometry, non-invasive cardiac output assessment, non-invasive skeletal muscle glycogen assessment, and systemic and tissue-specific metabolic utilization

11. Assessment of aluminium alloys anodised with tartaric sulphuric acid

AWE (Atomic Weapons Establishment) currently uses chromic acid anodising for passivating aluminium alloys to provide corrosion protection in a range of applications. Chromic acid anodising, however, gives rise to waste hexavalent chromium which is restricted under the European Union’s REACH Regulations. Alternative anodising treatments are therefore required.

This novel research programme is an evidence-based approach to develop anodised coatings that are fit for purpose in terms of key material properties, e.g. corrosion resistance, mechanical robustness, electrical breakdown voltage, coating adherence, and radiation hardness. The morphology and microstructure of the anodised layer will be analysed with various electron microscopy methods. Other techniques will be used to study the composition and surface chemistry of the coatings. The performance of the coatings will be assessed as a function of processing parameters, i.e. time, temperature, pH, and voltage. This experimental data will enable the coating performance to be related to the anodised layer’s microstructure and composition.
