1. Tower Insurance Climate Change Scholarships

The Tower Insurance Climate Change Scholarship was established in 2021 through the generous donation of Tower Insurance. In recent years, climate change has become an urgent issue impacting Tower’s customers and their communities. To support climate action, Tower has aligned its business interests with wider community interests and taken a lead on informed dialogue about sustainability and the changing climate. Three $5,000 scholarships will be awarded each year (2022-2024) to first-year undergraduate students studying the Bachelor of Climate Change. One scholarship for a data analytics major, one for an environmental planning major and one for a strategic management major will be awarded. Tower will also offer learning opportunities for the winning students, potentially including internships, as part of the scholarship.

For students who are enrolled full time (120 pts) in their first year of study towards a Bachelor of Climate Change majoring in either data analytics, environmental planning, or strategic management. Applicants must have achieved NCEA Level 3 with Excellence (or equivalent), or an A- GPA in any previous tertiary study.

2. The Scott Bartlett Memorial Scholarship

The Scott Bartlett Memorial Scholarship was established in 2021 by the University of Waikato Council in memory of Scott Bartlett. It was made possible through gifts from ASB, Kordia, and the University of Waikato. Scott studied a Bachelor of Electronic Commerce at the University in the early 2000s and was CEO of Kordia at the time of his death, aged 40, in December 2020. He had been a valued member of the University of Waikato Council since 2018, as well as a director of ASB. Three $4,000 scholarships will be available each year to students who will be completing the final year of either a conjoint degree, or a degree with a double major, in the year following application – where the degree(s) will include majors drawn from the Waikato Management School and one (or more) of the Schools of Science, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, or Engineering. The Scholarship will be opened for the first time in 2022 for students completing their studies in 2023.

3. The University of Waikato Distinguished Alumni Scholarship

The University of Waikato Distinguished Alumni Scholarship was established in 2021. It was funded in the first instance by Dr Andrew Smith, DAA 2019, who was the University’s first Rhodes Scholar. Since 2009, Dr Smith has been the CEO of Prolife Foods, following a strong career in international consumer and grocery markets. Dr Smith gifted the funding for this Scholarship, which aims to help students in their final year who are completing either a conjoint degree or a degree with a double major, including both a Management discipline and a discipline from one (or more) of the Schools of Science, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, or Engineering. Up to twelve $4,000 scholarships are available each year. The Scholarship will be opened for the first time in 2022 for students completing their studies in 2023.

4. The WSU John Houstoun Memorial Award

The WSU John Houstoun Memorial Award was established in 1993 with donations from the University of Waikato, Waikato Students’ Union, New Zealand University Students’ Association, and relatives and staff / students of the University as a memorial to John Houstoun. John was an outstanding President of the WSU in 1993 until his death by car accident on 9 July of that year. Up to one award is made each year. The value of the scholarship is $2,500

5. High Achievement Bursary for International Students

Established in 2019, the High Achievement Bursary for International Students aims to encourage talented international students to continue their study at the University of Waikato. The Bursary is valued up to NZ$5000 and will be deducted from the full international student fees for the second year of undergraduate study. The Bursary is open to all international students, enrolling in a full-time undergraduate programme, who studied at the University of Waikato in the preceding 12 months. Students who achieve a B+ grade average over their first 120-points will be automatically eligible for the High Achievement Bursary for their next 120-points. No application is required. The Bursary will be applied to tuition fees only and is not transferable.

The High Achievement Bursary for International Students aims to encourage talented international students at the University of Waikato. The Bursary is open to all current international students, enrolling in a full-time undergraduate programme who achieve a B+ grade average over their first 120 points. The Bursary is valued at NZ$5000.

6. The University of Waikato International Entrance Scholarship

The University of Waikato International Entrance Scholarship for School Leavers (formerly the International Excellence – NZ School Leavers Scholarship) was established in 2019. The Scholarship was set up to promote educational opportunities, foster internationalisation, and support talented onshore international students who are enrolling for the first time into, or who have a pathway offer to enrol into, an undergraduate programme at the University of Waikato. The Scholarship is open to all international students currently in New Zealand, who meet the eligibility requirements outlined below in the year prior to enrolling in the degree programme and thus taking up the scholarship. The Scholarship has a value of up to NZD$20,000 and will be awarded automatically on enrolment into an undergraduate degree programme. Recipients may be called upon to become global ambassadors for the University of Waikato. The Scholarship will be applied to tuition fees only and is not transferrable.

For international students completing Year 13 (or equivalent) at a NZ high school/learning institution in 2021 and intending to enrol full-time in an undergraduate degree at UoW in A Trimester 2022. Students must have completed study at NCEA Level 2 and/or 3, or equivalent. Those who have NCEA with Merit or Excellence will be eligible for additional funding as they progress through their degree.

7. WSU Scholarship for Cultural Contribution

The WSU Scholarship for Cultural Contribution was established to recognise and celebrate students who demonstrate outstanding cultural contribution to the University of Waikato. Normally only one award will be made each year. The value of the scholarship is $2,000

For students who are enrolled part- or full-time in an undergraduate degree at the University of Waikato and have completed at least 120-points of study at Waikato and can demonstrate outstanding cultural contribution to the University of Waikato.

8. Waikato Graduate Women Educational Trust

The Scholarship is to assist women students enrolled at a Waikato or Bay of Plenty tertiary institution in a bachelors programme in a non-traditional field for women. The scholarship award is $1,000 per annum for three years.

To assist women students who have been New Zealand Citizens or permanent residents for at least 2 years, and are enrolled full-time in the second year or above of a first degree, majoring in a non-traditional field for women (e.g. computer science, engineering).

9. Peter Ayson Undergraduate Award in Sports or Performing Arts & Community

The Peter Ayson Undergraduate Award in Sports or Performing Arts & Community (formerly the Peter Ayson Undergraduate Award in Sport and Community from 2017-2020) was established in 2020 by University of Waikato Alumnus and athletics champion Peter Ayson. The Award aims to support undergraduate students who show academic merit and strong commitment to sport or the performing arts and the community, to further their studies. One award of $4,000 is available each year with applications alternating between Performing Arts in odd years (e.g. 2021, 2023) and Sport in even years (e.g. 2022, 2024).

  • Eligibility

To be eligible for a 2022 Scholarship, candidates must be able to demonstrate academic merit and strong commitment to sport. Candidates must be domestic students who have completed at least one year of their undergraduate degree and will be enrolled full-time (i.e. 120 points) in the year of tenure and have maintained at least a ‘B’ average in their previous year of study.

10. University of Waikato Tauranga Campus Residential Scholarship

The University of Waikato Tauranga Campus Residential Scholarship (formerly the Mayfair Court University of Waikato Residential Scholarship) was developed in 2019 for University of Waikato students studying at the Tauranga Campus. The Scholarship coincided with the opening of the University of Waikato’s CBD campus in Tauranga in 2019. Accommodation provided by the University provides a supportive environment for its residents. The Scholarship is for students in financial need and is therefore only for students who are or will be residing in accommodation provided by the University of Waikato in Tauranga.

  • Eligibility

The Scholarships are designed to assist school leavers and returning undergraduate University of Waikato students who have proven academic potential, whose financial circumstances are severely constrained, and/or for whom there are other extraordinary circumstances, which make accommodation within a University residence demonstrably beneficial to their academic progress.
