About the Mastercard Scholars Program at UBC

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a comprehensive scholarship program that provides academically talented young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with access to quality and relevant education. The program supports students who are committed to giving back to their communities and contributing to social and economic transformation across the continent. The program offers full tuition, living expenses, mentorship, and other support services to undergraduate and graduate students at UBC.

Eligibility for the Mastercard Scholars Program at UBC

The following are the requirements for applying to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Masters’ Degree Program at UBC:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification
  • No prior graduate or PhD degree
  • Age limit of 35 years or less at the time of application (i.e. born in 1988 or after)
  • Citizenship or refugee status of a Sub-Saharan African country (listed here)
  • Significant life experience in a Sub-Saharan African country
  • Financial need and economic disadvantage
  • Academic excellence despite challenging circumstances
  • Leadership potential or qualities
  • Interest in and commitment to serving their home community
  • Need for a Canadian study permit to study in Canada
  • No asylum or protected person status claimed or will be claimed after arriving in Canada
  • Willingness to return to Africa and use their skills and knowledge for the benefit of others

Eligible Masters Program for the Award

The eligible master program for the scholarship award are:

  1. Faculty of Forestry offers three master’s programs:
  • Master of Sustainable Forest Management (MSFM)
  • Master of International Forestry (MIF)
  • Master of Geomatics for Environmental Management (MGEM)
  1. Faculty of Land and Food Systems offers three master’s programs:
  • Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE)
  • Master of Food Science (MFRS)
  • Master of Land and Water Systems (MLWS)
  1. Faculty of Science
  • Master of Data Science
