- PhD researcher – Economic Impact of and Acceptance of Sensor Systems in Poultry Farming
The Business Economics Group and Marketing and Consumer Behaviour Group are looking for a PhD researcher to work in the NWO-funded OBSeRVeD project. OBSeRVeD focuses on the development of a chip-based sensor platform for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Working in a wider group of researchers, you will as PhD researcher conduct research on the developed new sensor technologies and evaluate technology acceptance by poultry farmers with adaptive conjoint analysis, and evaluate the cost-effectivity of the developed sensor technologies via bio-economic modeling.
You work with a consortium of researchers and private sector actors and deliver input for the e-Nose system in the OBSeRVeD -project. Throughout the project, feedback from stakeholders like farmers and technology developers provides guidance about how to develop the technology further. The research is embedded within the Business Economics Group with Prof. Henk Hogeveen as the promotor. You will be co-supervised by Dr. Frans Verhees (Marketing and Consumer Behaviour) and Dr. Mariska van der Voort (Business Economics Group).

- PhD position In silico modeling of cuttlefish suction cup morphology and mechanics fully funded phd programs
As a PhD candidate, you will use various techniques to model how suction cup morphology (e.g., geometry, tissue composition) influences its mechanics (e.g., internal stress distributions, contact mechanics). You will also work with engineers and roboticists to develop biomimetic models of the suction cups to provide further insights into their functional morphology and improve soft robotics grippers.
This study is part of an international project to uncover the functional morphology of cuttlefish suction cups, led by the Experimental Zoology Group at Wageningen University & Research, and in collaboration with international experts in biology, physics, and engineering. At the Experimental Zoology Group, you will have access to state-of-the-art computational infrastructure and experimental facilities for fabrication and testing. - PhD position – Restoring pollinator habitats using multi-actor participatory approaches
We are looking for a PhD candidate who is keen to perform state-of-the-art research on restoration strategies for pollinator communities, who is positively enthusiastic about analyzing large multi-year and multi-country datasets to address conservation ecological questions and who is interested in the views of stakeholders and likes interacting with them. Research findings will need to be published in international academic journals. The PhD candidate will also be involved in the supervision of MSc students who perform their thesis research within the framework of the project.
Wild bees, hoverflies and butterflies are declining rapidly across Europe mostly because of agricultural intensification and land-use change. The most commonly implemented pollinator restoration measures, planting wildflower strips or hedges, are effective but insufficient to halt pollinator decline, particularly of rare species. Using newly collected and existing data from multiple European countries, this project will test which type of restoration approach is most effective in enhancing pollinator diversity and pollination services. It will specifically examine if and how co-design of measures together with local stakeholders (e.g. farmers, policy makers, nature organisations) is improving the effectiveness of pollinator restoration efforts, and how this is linked to key characteristics of the co-design process.

- PhD Position: High-throughput Rhizotron data from environmental challenged root systems towards AI
The aim of this project is to gain understanding in environmental effects on root architecture in soil using high throughput 2D soil rhizotron image data, which will be generated in the growth room based rhizotron system in module 4, which is part of the Netherlands Plant Eco-phenotyping Centre (NPEC).
During the project standard operating procedures for data acquisition, imaging protocols and data labeling for deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI) applications on root systems will be established. The Cultural Geography group at Wageningen University and Research is looking for a full-time Doctoral Candidate (DC) in the field of urban greening and health. The title of the project is Nature-based Solutions for Health (NBS4HEALTH) and is part of the Marie Skłodwska-Curie Doctoral Network GreeNexUS.
The research is embedded within the chair group Cultural Geography (GEO) led by Prof. Edward Huijbens. You will be co-supervised by Karolina Doughty and Sjerp de Vries. The GEO chair group is committed to social theory in all its spatial articulations. The group advances creative, critical-constructive scholarship through exploring the ecological and social challenges facing all life on earth.
The project will focus on the study of the relationships between objective health data and green area availability where people live, and on the health benefits that can be expected by greening residential neighbourhoods, to identify what type of nature reduces stress best in real-life settings. The goals of the project are to study the extent to which socioeconomic health disparities may be reduced by making optimal use of the stress-reducing qualities of contact with nature, and to study which types of nature are most effective in this regard for people with a low socioeconomic status.

- PhD position ‘The Economics, Sustainability and Resilience of Novel and High-tech food-supply chains’
The main focus of the research will be on the empirical analysis of (1) the sustainability and resilience of novel food-supply chains, and (2) the decision-making of food-value chain actors, i.e., how the design of the novel supply chain organization and the interactions of actors within, affect the implementation, sustainability and resilience of these food -supply chains.
The PhD project has a quantitative-analytical nature. Various techniques will be applied, such as qualitative and quantitative analysis of data, the analysis of decision-making and behavior using surveys and workshops, as well as the design of a sustainable supply-chain game. The aim is to supply relevant information for the design of novel, sustainable and resilient food-supply chains. Hence, the translation of research findings to other disciplines and working together with food-supply chain stakeholders also is an important aspects of the work.

- PhD Position for Reverse Stress testing
The Operations Research and Logistics group of Wageningen University is hiring a PhD candidate (4 years, full-time employment) to support the development of a new methodology for managing supply chain risks based on stress testing methods. So far, the management of risks in supply chains has mainly relied on the identification and classification of supply chain risks based on impact and probability of occurrence. Unfortunately, it turns out that often risks are very difficult to predict and that one may need to analyze many (often irrelevant) scenarios.
In the proposed research project, we aim to develop a reverse approach to tackling supply chain risks. This approach starts from the conditions under which a supply chain functions well, instead of the supply chain risks themselves. This approach is inspired by risk analysis approaches in the financial world that became common practice after the 2008 financial crisis. In this project, you will further outline and detail this approach using quantitative models and methods. You will collaborate with a variety of food companies that the ORL group has strong ties with, including food processing and retail.

Population growth, climate change, resource depletion, and soil degradation are enormous challenges for agriculture. Successful agricultural decision-making requires sensing soil heterogeneity (soil compaction, moisture, phosphorus, nitrogen) in real-time to optimize time, location, and degree of agricultural operations (e.g., sowing, irrigating, fertilizing, and harvesting). We are seeking a PhD student to join our international collaborative research project CAINA (Cloud-Aerosol Interactions in a Nitrogen-dominated Atmosphere) to work on the measurement and modeling of nitrate aerosol formation, transport, transformation, and deposition, including the study of organonitrate and brown carbon (BrC) formation, and the role of (organo)nitrates in cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) formation.
