Otago International Excellence Scholarships welcome, support and recognize the very best international students commencing selected postgraduate programmes in New Zealand. These merit-based scholarships recognize academic excellence, diversity, and leadership potential in supporting high-achieving students in their studies. Eligible programmes for the Otago international excellence scholarship in New Zealand are:
- Business, Humanities and Science
Students must be applying to study a programme in one of the following eligible programme categories:
Masters (coursework) degrees
Excluding the Master of Business Administration (MBA)
Masters (Research) degrees
Postgraduate diplomas
Excluding the Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Health (PGDipHeal)
Honours degrees
- Offshore students
For students outside of New Zealand, the programme must also be available via:
Online learning (programmes temporarily offered online due to COVID‑19)

Value of the Award
The Otago International Excellence Scholarship in New Zealand will award NZ$10,000 for tuition fees for full-time study for a 12 months duration program

Eligibility for the Otago International Excellence Scholarship
To be considered for an Otago scholarship award, students must:
- Be international students who are not citizens, permanent residents or resident visa holders of New Zealand or Australia*; and
- Have met the entry requirements for an eligible programme; and
- Have met the award level for the scholarship; and
- Be subject to paying international tuition fees; and
- Be intending to commence full-time study in that programme in 2023.
Part-time students
Scholarships may be offered to part-time students as long as they meet all other eligibility criteria. The scholarship will be awarded on a pro-rata basis, based on the amount of study applied for. Part-time applicants currently in New Zealand are strongly encouraged to speak to Immigration New Zealand to ensure their chosen study option is possible under visa requirements.

Application and Selection Process
Students will be assessed for a scholarship on the application for their programme and recipients will be advised of their scholarship in the Offer of Place.
The selection of scholarship recipients is at the discretion of the University of Otago.
