Introduction

Academic document authentication in Nigeria is an essential process for individuals seeking to use their educational qualifications for various purposes, such as employment, further studies, or immigration, especially outside the country. With more Nigerians aspiring to secure international opportunities, there has been an increasing demand for authenticated academic documents that confirm their legitimacy and value.

You will learn the essence of this exercise and the easy process of getting it done without wasting time and money as I did during my time.

What is Academic Document Authentication in Nigeria?

Document authentication is the process of verifying that a document, such as a diploma, certificate, or transcript, is genuine and issued by an accredited institution. This process ensures that the academic credentials presented by individuals are legitimate, properly endorsed, and accepted by institutions, employers, or immigration authorities abroad.

In Nigeria, academic documents are typically authenticated by the Federal Ministry of Education while non-academic documents are authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For international use, additional steps, such as embassy attestation, may be required, especially for scholarship applications, visa processing, or foreign job opportunities. This process is called Legalization.

Why Do Academic Documents Need Authentication?

Academic document authentication is crucial for several reasons. Four of the major reasons are:

  1. Validation of Authenticity: Authentication confirms that your certificates and transcripts were issued by a legitimate and accredited institution. This prevents issues with fraud, counterfeit degrees, or misrepresentation.
  2. International Requirements: Foreign employers, universities, and immigration departments often require that documents from outside their country be authenticated by the relevant government authorities to ensure they meet the necessary standards.
  3. Immigration and Visa Applications: Many countries require authenticated academic documents as part of visa or immigration applications, particularly for students and professionals applying for work permits or permanent residency.
  4. Scholarships and Admissions: When applying for scholarships or admission to universities abroad, authenticated documents demonstrate that your qualifications are recognized and credible. They ensure that you meet the academic requirements for your desired program or opportunity.

How to Authenticate Academic Documents in Nigeria

Here is a step-by-step guide to authenticating your academic documents in Nigeria:

Step 1: Visit your alma mater to initiate the process

The first stage of academic document authentication or evaluation in Nigeria begins with the institution you graduated from. Your institution will first need to send your documents to the Federal Ministry of Education before the authentication can be done. So:

Visit your institution’s exams and records to explain to them that you want to authenticate your document.

For the case of my alma mater—Federal University of Technology Akure, this stage has been automated to be completed online. I sent an online application with my transcript and bachelor’s degree as attachments to registrar@futa.edu.ng and I copied ess@education.gov.ng, lauraephapa@yahoomail.com. I then paid the processing fee of NGN 5000 on the University’s website and attached the receipt with the mail to the registrar. You may have to find out how this stage is done in your own institution.

You wait for some days for your alma mater to verify your credentials and notify the Federal Ministry of Education that you graduated from the institution.

Step 2: Proceed online to book an appointment

  • After you receive mail from your alma mater confirming that you are a genuine graduate of the school, you then proceed to book an online appointment on the ministry website.
  • Create an account on the portal and select Authentication
  • Follow the instructions on original document uploads
  • Select the date you would like to appear in person from the portal
  • Submit your application and pay. Note that, as of August 31, 2024, you pay NGN 1000 per page of document upload.
  • Gather your original documents and make 2 extra copies of each
  • Appear on your day of appointment for your academic document authentication at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, Nigeria.
