One unique aspect of university admissions in Sweden is that the process is centralized—meaning all applications are handled through the Swedish Council for Higher Education.
Here is a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process:
Step 1: Decide on a Program
Before anything else, decide on the program you want to study. Research the fields that align with your academic and career goals. Make sure that your motivation for studying in Sweden aligns with SDG-related fields, as many programs emphasize sustainability.
Step 2: Visit the Central Admission System
Head over to Universityadmissions.se, the official website where all university applications in Sweden are processed. You will be able to search for programs, specify the degree type (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD), and choose your preferred intake—either Autumn (starting in September) or Spring (starting in January).
Step 3: Review Program Requirements
Once you have found a program of interest, carefully review the admission requirements. Here are some key things to look out for:
Prerequisites: Make sure your previous degree is compatible with the program requirements. For example, a bachelor’s degree in engineering might be required for a master’s in Industrial Engineering, with specific ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) requirements in subjects like programming or mathematics.
Language of Instruction: Verify whether the program is taught in English or Swedish.
Semester Start Date: Confirm when the semester begins, as universities have different start dates.

Once you have gathered all the necessary information, go back to Universityadmissions.se and create an account. You can apply to up to four programs in one application window. If you’re from a non-EU country, you will need to pay an application fee of 900 SEK.
Step 5: Submit Your Documents
Ensure that all the required documents are ready before submitting your application. Typical documents include:

- Transcript of records
- International passport
- Two letters of reference
- Letter of motivation
- CV
- Project portfolio (if required)
- Language proficiency certificate (if applicable)
As part of the Swedish university application process, your graduating institution must send your official transcript directly to the Swedish Council for Higher Education. It’s crucial to ensure that your university includes your Swedish application number on the envelope—this small detail can make a big difference. In my 2022 application, this oversight led to the rejection of my application. Your application number can be found in your online portal after you create an account. Be sure to communicate this clearly with your university to avoid any issues
Step 6: Track Application Deadlines
